McDonald’s Canada changes chicken source due to COVID-19 disruptions

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, we are making temporary changes to our chicken sourcing.

As a result of ongoing disruptions resulting from COVID-19, we continue to experience issues with our chicken supply.

To ensure the availability of McChicken® sandwiches at our restaurants across Canada, we will be temporarily sourcing McChicken patties from a Canadian contingency supplier. As a result, we will temporarily not meet our global commitment to source chicken raised without antibiotics important to human medicine for our McChicken sandwiches. Guests will not experience any difference in the taste, safety and quality of the McChicken they love.

At McDonald’s Canada, we are proud of our global commitment to sourcing chicken raised without antibiotics important to human medicine, which goes above and beyond Canadian regulatory requirements. While we temporarily will not align with our global commitment with respect to our McChicken sandwiches, our guests can be confident that the chicken used is raised in accordance with Canadian regulatory standards. We aim to return to sourcing chicken raised without antibiotics important to human medicine for our McChicken sandwiches as soon as supply can catch up with demand.

(Updated April 23, 2021):  McDonald’s Canada is aware of the impact COVID-19 has had on the Cargill facility in London, ON, and Cargill’s decision to pause production temporarily. Our top priority is everyone’s health and well-being, including our supplier partners and their employees – it’s at the core of everything we do. We wish all those affected a full recovery.

We monitor our supply closely and are working on plans to ensure the continued supply of chicken to our Canadian restaurants. As part of our standard operating procedures, our supply chain has enacted our contingency plan, and, as a result, we will begin temporarily sourcing Chicken McNuggets from a McDonald’s supplier in the U.S.

We aim to return to a fully Canadian McNuggets supply as soon as production at the London, ON facility, can safely resume and catch up with demand.
