UEP is pleased to congratulate Joshua Cassar, the 2021 winner of the Maurice Stein Fellowship Award.
Cassar is a Ph.D. candidate at The Pennsylvania State University majoring in Animal Science, focusing on food safety for meat and poultry processing. Cassar previously completed both his B.S. and M.S. in Animal Science at Penn State and served as a production manager with Bell & Evans.
Cassar’s graduate research investigated the use of pulsed ultraviolet light as a decontamination intervention for chicken, pet food, shell eggs, and food contact surfaces. He plans to defend his dissertation and graduate this summer and seek employment in food safety management for the meat and safety industries, or with a regulatory agency.
The Maurice Stein Fellowship Award, administered by the Poultry Science Association, is granted annually to a graduate student whose training and research in applied poultry sciences may improve the efficiency and profitability of the egg industry. This award, established in 1972, recognizes UEP’s first Chairman of the Board, Maurice Stein.
