Berlin will receive a $500,000 strategic demolition fund grant to demolish the former Tyson Plant building at Heron Park.

The 60-acre park, located on Old Ocean City Boulevard, was used as a chicken processing facility during the 20th century. The plant closed in 2003, and Berlin bought the property 13 years later with hopes to redevelop the land into a park.

The grant has been awarded through the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) FY2022 State Revitalization Program.

A formal request for proposals is also in the works for the potential purchase or development of two of the park’s parcels, including the parcel where the Tyson Plant building is located, according to the release.
