London’s Cargill chicken processing plant remained closed Tuesday but management is “optimistic” of opening this week after a fire over the holiday weekend.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation but fire fighters said it appeared to break out in a trash compactor area.
“Our team is still working to determine what happened,” said Daniel Sullivan, media relations director at Cargill. “We were closed because of the holiday, but there was a skeleton crew in for cleaning.
“We are just glad everyone is safe. We are optimistic of reopening,” soon.
The fire was reported Monday at about 4:30 a.m. London Fire Department said damage was substantial.
Cargill employs about 700 production workers at its London plant.
