Top 10 Reasons to Keep Coturnix Quail

624
While many say that chickens are the gateway animal for homesteading, Coturnix quail are the birds that opened my eyes to the joy of backyard animal husbandry. I first learned about this breed of quail from my aunt and uncle, who kept a small covey as layers, and raised grow outs to fill their freezer. Because I grew up in a hunting family, I knew that quail meat is delicious, but I had never tried their tasty little eggs before visiting my aunt and uncle’s backyard homestead. They helped me bring home my first five laying hens, and the rest is history. I have learned a lot about keeping Coturnix quail over the years, and can’t imagine my backyard without them now.
