Dr. Revathi Shanmugasundaram – Understanding mycotoxins in poultry diets

702

Mycotoxins are often present in poultry diets and can pose a significant challenge. That is because co-occurrence of mycotoxins reduces the tolerance levels of individual mycotoxins; in other words, multiple mycotoxins in poultry feed, even at subclinical levels, can exacerbate mycotoxin pathology and lead to necrotic enteritis. In this episode, Dr. Revathi Shanmugasundaram discusses her research on how mycotoxins, particularly fumonisins and deoxynivalenol, interact with foodborne pathogens in poultry and affect the health of the animals.

“We want to know what’s the lowest concentration of mycotoxins that will not affect production performance and that will not cause bacterial infections or subclinical diseases.” – Dr. Revathi Shanmugasundaram
