“Calgary Takes Action: Demolition of Lilydale Poultry Plant Marks a New Chapter for Ramsay Community”

The City of Calgary is set to commence the demolition of the long-standing Lilydale poultry plant this week. Nestled on Hurst Road in the evolving community of Ramsay, the plant operated for decades amidst the growth of the surrounding residential area.

The plant became a focal point of contention for local residents over the years, primarily due to concerns about odors, noise levels, and increased traffic. In 2017, the city initiated collaboration with Sofina Foods to acquire the land, finalizing possession by January 2022.

The upcoming demolition is a significant step as the site is earmarked for the construction of the Green Line LRT project in the coming year. The space will serve a dual purpose, accommodating the future LRT alignment and providing a staging area for construction activities.

Post-construction, the land will be opened up for development, offering a promising prospect for revitalization in Ramsay. The city, in a recent news release, highlighted the eagerness of local businesses and residents to witness the transformation of this property.

The city emphasized the broader impact of such projects, stating, “As the Green Line project continues towards the start of main construction, communities along the future LRT line are starting to see changes.” These initiatives not only pave the way for future Green Line transit infrastructure but also contribute to minimizing project risks and enhancing efficiency in the construction of tracks, stations, tunnels, and bridges.
