Effective from the spring of 2024, the company will transition from its current “no antibiotics ever” (NAE) standard to a “no antibiotics important to human medicine” (NAIHM) protocol.

This significant policy shift, as elucidated in a statement on Chick-fil-A’s official website, underscores the company’s commitment to meeting customer expectations while navigating evolving industry dynamics. By aligning with the NAIHM standard, which is endorsed by both the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the World Health Organization (WHO), Chick-fil-A aims to ensure a sustainable supply chain without compromising on product quality.

The NAIHM framework permits the use of antibiotics that are deemed non-essential for the treatment of human diseases, including ionophores and coccidiostats. According to statements provided to Reuters, Chick-fil-A cited anticipated challenges in sourcing chicken supplies that meet the stringent criteria of its existing NAE standard as the primary driver behind this policy revision. Matt Abercrombie, Director of Menu and Packaging at Chick-fil-A, emphasized the company’s responsiveness to consumer preferences in a 2019 statement, stating, “We know consumers care about how their food is made and where it comes from, including the use of antibiotics. Because it was important to our customers, it was important to us.”
