Under the leadership of the Food Safety Branch, the http://www1.agric.gov.ab.ca/$department/deptdocs.nsf/all/afs14398 is responsible for regulating 115 red meat and poultry abattoirs, 85 mobile butchers and 33 mobile butcher facilities in Alberta. As a Meat Inspector, you will be responsible for providing inspection services at provincial abattoirs in the specified region. Duties while performing kill floor inspection services will include: pre-operation, ante and post-mortem examination, time reporting, and relevant inspection documentation, as well as appropriate record keeping. This work requires an understanding of animal diseases and pathology, humane handling and stunning requirements, sanitation practices, and food safety control programs. This position is a regulatory role and involves the onsite enforcement of provincial statutes administered by the Meat & Dairy Inspection Section. You must be familiar with and have the ability to interpret the Meat Inspection Act, Meat Inspection Regulations, and Meat Facility Standards.
To be successful in this role, strong CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING is required as you apply sound knowledge Food Safety risk assessment and good manufacturing practices to determine appropriate corrective actions. Strong verbal communication, negotiation and conflict management skills are required as you BUILD COLLABORATIVE ENVIRONMENTS working with abattoir operators and staff to ensure daily abattoir operations consider stakeholder needs while meeting legislative requirements. Your DRIVE FOR RESULTS will ensure that documentation pertaining to your role is completed and submitted in a manner that meets MDIS’S operational requirements.
Competence in operating computer technology and computer applications is necessary in this role for the purposes of daily and communication and the preparation of inspection reports/documentation. Applicants must have the ability to interpret, communicate and implement a variety of legislative and regulatory documentation.
Tech 3 positions are trainee positions and will be under the supervision of a fully qualified Tech 4 meat inspector during the training period.
Technologist 3: Two-year technical diploma in a related field, such as Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, or Food Safety. Equivalencies in experience will be considered.
Technologist 4: Two-year technical diploma in a related field, such as Animal Science, Animal Health Technology, or Food Safety plus a minimum of 2 years directly related work experience in kill floor ante-mortem and post-mortem meat inspection.
For both positions knowledge of animal diseases/pathology is required. Experience using computer technology is a must. Applicants with experience within the Canadian federal or provincial meat inspection system are preferred.
