Applicable to the USA only
- One minute kill at a cost-effective dilution rate against the avian influenza H7N9 strain
- Demonstrated effectiveness against influenza A virus and is expected to inactivate all influenza A viruses including pandemic 2009 H1N1 influenza A virus
- Effective against AI (H7N9) in cold temperatures (5°C) and in the presence of organic challenge (5% organic soil load)
- Suitable for the disinfection of farm surfaces, equipment, vehicles and foot baths
A recent confirmed case of avian influenza in a flock of turkeys in the U.S. underlines the importance of disinfection and good hygiene practices in poultry farms.
The premier veterinary and livestock disinfectant Virkon™ S from specialty chemicals company LANXESS has been evaluated by Accuratus Lab Services in the United States against the avian influenza virus H7N9 strain. This study was carried out under the conditions as required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and confirmed that Virkon™ S achieves complete deactivation of the avian influenza virus (H7N9) in just one minute, at an excellent in-use dilution rate of 1:200, and in the presence of five percent organic challenge.
An outbreak of avian influenza can decimate flocks and can be financially crippling. It is therefore imperative that poultry producers remain highly vigilant of avian influenza and reassess, fine-tune and implement the highest levels of continuous and terminal biosecurity at all times.
Virkon™ S is designed for use in all avian influenza disinfection and decontamination procedures in and around the poultry house including the disinfection of surfaces, equipment, vehicles and foot baths.
Virkon™ S, unlike a number of other disinfectants, remains highly effective against specific pathogens1 such as: avian influenza, avian infectious bronchitis and avian adenovirus in cold temperatures (5oC/41oF) and in the presence of 5 percent organic challenge without the need to increase its concentration or surface contact time.
Jeff Odle, North America technical sales manager, Market Segment Disinfection in the Material Protection Products business unit (MPP) at LANXESS, explains, “Enhanced avian influenza biosecurity is an area that most producers are giving great thought to, but this needs to be worked at and tailored to specific farms, with constant review. Producers need to think about how avian influenza can get onto a farm and then think of policies to try and prevent this. Selecting a disinfectant that is independently proven effective against multiple avian influenza strains and other major poultry disease-causing organisms should therefore be one of their top priorities.”
