Alabama man sues Wayne Farms over stabbing

A former Wayne Farms employee is suing the company for negligence in hiring practices after he was stabbed last year by a coworker at the processor’s Decatur, Ala., chicken plant, according to local media reports.

Cedric Owens was hospitalized after being stabbed by Detavious Sellers at work in January 2021, which led to Sellers’ arrest on assault charges, WAFF reports, citing local court documents.

Attorneys for Owens, looking into Seller’s background, discovered that in October 2020 he had shot someone in the face, neck and abdomen. But the related assault charge was dismissed by a Morgan County Judge at the District Attorney’s request, according to the report.

In filing the lawsuit, Owens’ lawyers want to determine if that information was omitted from Wayne Farms’ hiring process or if it was employer oversight.
