Allergen Alert: Vanee Foods Recalls Over 9,500 Pounds of Mislabeled Chicken-Flavored Base

Vanee Foods, located in Broadview, Illinois, has initiated a recall of approximately 9,564 pounds of chicken-flavored base product due to misbranding and the presence of undeclared allergens. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) made the announcement, revealing that the product, labeled as “Sysco Classic Chicken Flavored Base,” may actually contain beef base, which includes soy and wheat – allergens not mentioned on the product label.

The product, lacking the USDA mark of inspection, was distributed to various locations, including Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia, through distributors for further supply to restaurants.

The issue came to light when Vanee Foods informed FSIS about the inadvertent shipment of beef base products incorrectly labeled as chicken-flavored base. Despite no confirmed reports of adverse reactions from consuming these products, FSIS expresses concern that some may be present in the dry storage of restaurants. Restaurants that have obtained these products are strongly advised not to serve them, and the items should either be discarded or returned to the point of purchase.
