Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has been confirmed in a flock of commercial broiler chickens in Missouri. The facility is located in Stoddard County, Missouri (Southeast Missouri) along the Mississippi flyway.
The USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is working closely with state animal health officials on a joint incident response. The affected premises has been quarantined, and all the birds on the properties will be depopulated to prevent the spread of the disease. Birds from the flock will not enter the food system.
Samples from the flock were tested at the University of Missouri Veterinary Medical Diagnostics Laboratory and confirmed at the APHIS National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa.
As part of the avian influenza response plans, Federal and State partners are working on additional surveillance and testing areas around the affected flock.
HPAI does not present an immediate public health concern and no human cases of these avian influenza viruses have been detected in the United States.
