Insights into March’s Varied Trends in U.S. Egg Production

March saw a mixed bag in U.S. egg production, according to the latest report from the USDA. Total egg production increased by 1% to reach 9.29 billion, driven by an improved rate of lay despite a decline in the number of laying hens. This decrease was attributed to the discovery of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in some flocks, resulting in depopulation efforts.

The number of egg-type chicks hatched was down by 4% compared to last year, totaling 56.5 million. Placements for future hatchery supply flocks by breeders were also down by 1%, indicating a potential decrease in egg production, although efficiency gains may offset this.

In contrast, the hatching of broiler-type chicks saw a 1% increase, reaching 854 million. Placements for future production were up by 5% compared to the previous year.

Looking ahead, the USDA will release updated annual projections for broiler and egg production on May 10th. These projections will provide further insights into the direction of the industry amidst ongoing challenges such as disease outbreaks and fluctuating demand.
