Michigan’s poultry industry faces another blow as a second commercial flock this year falls prey to Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), with the latest incident occurring in Newaygo County, according to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
This marks the first instance of the virus in Newaygo County since its initial appearance in the state back in 2022. The recent detection represents the seventh outbreak of HPAI in commercial poultry across Michigan.
Dr. Nora Wineland, the state veterinarian, emphasizes the critical importance of preventing wild birds from mingling with farms to mitigate the virus’s impact, particularly as spring migration persists. Efforts to safeguard against further outbreaks remain paramount as the poultry industry grapples with the ongoing threat of avian influenza.
