Residents appeal proposed poultry farm in Michigan

A proposed poultry farm is continuing to stir controversy in southeastern Michigan.

The proposed commercial farm would house 45,000 chickens and be located in Silver Creek Township, near the Sister Lakes community, a popular vacation spot.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) last month determined Silver Creek Poultry LLC had a suitable site to operate a commercial poultry farm, but that decision is now under review following an appeal filed by residents.

“The Township has stayed current with MDARD’s review and the approval process for the proposed Silver Creek Poultry LLC poultry farm. As you may know, the Right to Farm Act and GAAMPs (Generally Accepted Agricultural and Management Practices) preempt — to a large extent — township zoning control for this farm operation,” reads a notice on the Silver Creek Township Board site.

The township is “confident in MDARD’s analysis and site suitability determination and will not take an appeal of this decision,” the board added.

MDARD did not immediately return a request for comment.
