The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agriculture Marketing Service (AMS) today announced plans to purchase up to $30 million of chicken products due to market disruptions brought on by COVID-19.

In response to today’s announcement, NCC President Mike Brown released the following statement:

“On behalf of U.S. chicken producers, I want to thank Secretary Perdue for this timely action and for his steadfast leadership at USDA especially during these unprecedented times.  I also want to commend the dedicated officials at the Agricultural Marketing Service and Food Nutrition Service who work tirelessly to ensure that recipients of these programs are provided with high-quality and nutritious chicken in light of the ongoing challenges with COVID-19.

“Today’s announcement will help improve continuity in the supply chain by diverting some chicken products once destined for foodservice into much-needed channels.

“While this announcement reflects the continued commitment to chicken producers, rural America and U.S. agriculture, it also ensures that chicken is making its way to financially-stressed families, food banks, disaster-relief operations, schools and Americans needing food assistance.”
