Making Difference from
Farm to Families in Need

Nonprofit serves at “Champion of Protein”

HATCH for Hunger, founded in 2015 by Elanco CEO, Jeff Simmons, with a vision to champion protein as a main food source, has been instrumental in bringing people across the food chain together since its inception with a core mission of delivering high-quality egg protein to underserved communities across the nation.

“HATCH is proud to not only work with many of America’s egg farmers today, but envisioning how we can continue to grow with additional partners to bring even more protein options to the nation’s food banks and pantries,” says Danny Leckie, executive director of HATCH.

As of fall 2022, HATCH has delivered 4.5 million dozen eggs to 42 food banks in 19 states stretching from North Carolina to California.

New model of non-profit

In re-imagining how a traditional non-profit interacts with food producers, distributors and end-use customers, HATCH uses its collaborative power to change the way undernourished consumers get healthy food. For the egg producer that means having a new outlet for small/medium eggs that can make a huge difference to those who are in need of a nutritious source of high quality protein.

“In the United States more than 42 million people don't know where their next meal is coming from and 13 million of those are children,” Leckie says. “With today’s economy, those who can’t afford to purchase healthy food only continue to rise. This means HATCH’s mission to help undernourished children and families get the food they need is more important than ever.”

Starts on the farm

By starting with egg farmers, we've created a sustainable system to get good food in the hands that need it most. We believe that eggs are the key ingredient for solving America’s food insecurity crisis and will make a real impact in the lives of those who consume them.

According to Hatch, some current producer partners include Rose Acre Farms, MPS Egg Farms, Country Charm Eggs, S&R Eggs and Gerry's Organic Eggs.

Food relief is happening on a national level - but the frustration is that most giving campaigns result in food that doesn't add to people's health. HATCH is a grassroots organization building a solution to undernourishment and food insecurity straight from the source - the farm.

Food distribution goes the final mile

The logistics of donating a refrigerated product like eggs takes a team to coordinate between the farm, the food bank and the consumer. Eggs must be refrigerated during transportation to maintain food safety. Getting eggs from HATCH allows food banks and pantries to provide a safe, nutritious meal to underserved families.

HATCH is able to amplify the impact of farms by spreading out eggs across a variety of food giving organizations. This allows communities beyond the local farm to get access to high-quality protein.

Get involved with HATCH

HATCH brings together the power of those who supply healthy foods to our nation's grocery store shelves to the shelves of food pantries and food giving organizations in a sustainable way - one where helping people doesn't hurt businesses.

“While we firmly believe charity is important, it's not the only answer,” Leckie says. “We are always looking to build upon our incredible food partners at every point along the food chain to help bring more healthy, high-protein to organizations that are on the front lines of hunger and poverty in their local communities.”
